"I was tired of seeing us struggle," Chris McGaha shared. "We knew we had the potential to perform better, so we decided to take a step back and address the issues." This pause allowed them to focus on performance enhancements and tackle some of the challenges that had plagued their recent seasons.
Back to Basics
During their time off, the team worked tirelessly to improve every aspect of their performance. Multiple dyno sessions were dedicated to addressing a suspected horsepower issue. "We ran an engine on the dyno, and while it didn't meet our power expectations, we realized that our previous engine, with similar power, had achieved a 6.52 in Seattle," Chris explained. This discovery led them to question if they were on the right track after all.
"Sometimes, you can get caught in a cycle of adjustments, and it's easy to lose your way. We had to back things down and remember that Pro Stock racing is about more than just horsepower," he added.
A New Approach
For their return to the track in Sonoma, the team has adopted a streamlined approach. They've brought just one car, the Silver Bullet Camaro, driven by Mason. "We're going back to basics," Chris said. "We had success with a single-car setup before, so we're giving it another go. We want to focus on our best car, engine, and driver."
Future Innovations
The team's long-term vision is also an exciting aspect of their story. With the announcement of the 2027 rules package, allowing for hood scoops and fuel injection innovations, the McGahas have already begun their preparations. "We've been working on our 2027 program for a while now, and I can tell you these cars will be fast," Chris revealed. "The new rules will bring noticeable improvements, and we might even see the record broken in great air conditions."
Competing in Comp
The team's plans for the upcoming races are flexible, but they're considering running two cars at Indy, with one potentially in the Comp category. "We've had success in Comp, and Mason wants to bring that car to Indy. We know we can be competitive, and the chance to win a diamond Wally at NHRA's biggest event is a huge incentive," Chris added.
A Rising Talent
Mason McGaha, a teenager making waves in the 6-second Pro Stock car, has impressed with his wise decisions and consistent starts. Chris believes they're on the right path to showcase Mason's talents. "We're stubborn, we don't give up, and we'll keep working until we get it right. I think we're closer than we realize, but we'll find out this weekend," he concluded.
